Pollution contributes to the harmful environment that results in adverse effect on living beings. It is one of the major concern areas for the whole world. It is a global issue involving the United Nations, governments, voluntary institutions and the media.

Students need to be made fully aware of the adverse effects of rising pollution. Also, being the future generation, they can play a vital role in controlling pollution if they are familiar with this threat to the survival of mankind.

Here we are providing you some useful articles on pollution under various categories according to varying words limits. You can choose any of them according to your need:

Anything added into the environment that results in producing harmful or poisonous effect on living things is called pollution. Pollution is the process that makes nature’s resources such as land, water, air or other parts of the environment unsafe or unsuitable to use. Pollution can be of many types:  soil, air, water, thermal, radioactive, noise, and light. The toxins released are inhaled by each one of us while we breathe.

Inhaling poisonous air is as hazardous as smoking. It is not only the humans who are affected from this polluted environment but also the animals. Air is filled with highly toxic gases. These dangerous gases in environment are released by the power industries that burn fossil fuels, industries that dispose wastes in the water, farmers using pesticides, high usage of artificial lights and loud sounds, etc. Each of these leads to generation of the life threatening cause – pollution.

Any use of natural resources at a rate higher than the nature’s capacity to restore itself can result in pollution of air, water, and land. Other than human activities, there are a few periodic natural cycles that also result in release of dangerous stuff. Natural activities other than the human activities like volcanic eruption, dust wildfires, etc also result in creation of pollution.

Globalization is another major cause of pollution. Globalization has become an effective facilitator of environmental degradation.

Conclusion

Every individual owns certain responsibility of maintaining few points such as not throwing garbage all around, growing trees, using public transport instead of their own, etc. We must shun excessive consumption and avoid careless and deliberate disposal of post-consumption waste resources which could otherwise be recycled and would led to pollution control.

Pollution cannot be reduced or controlled if a sense of responsibility towards our Mother Earth is not felt by all concerned.

Pollution is a process of making the environment dirty, unhealthy and unsuitable for humans and animals to live. It is caused due to the release of both tangible and intangible contaminants. These can be released naturally or by humans themselves accidentally or deliberately.

More than 200 million people are affected due to toxic pollutants. Due to pollution, there are few countries that have faced defected child birth and increase in mortality rate. Humans are regularly exposed to pollution when they inhale toxic air inside them.

Pollution can be controlled, if not eliminated. Efforts such as promoting green environment, proper disposal of waste, etc are simple steps that lead to great emphasis on maintaining the order of environment.

Preventive measures:

Plant trees/cultivate garden to curb polluted air and release more oxygen.
Switch off electricity-based equipments when not in use: lights, fans, machines, etc.
Make high use of natural energy than electric energy: dry the clothes naturally.
Use recyclable products, wherever possible.
Avoid plastic bags and use paper bags.
Avoid wastage of paper and use both the sides.
Restrict usage of hazardous chemicals.
Don’t overuse heaters and air conditioners.
Use public transport to reduce noise, air and light pollution.
Protect Mother Earth by not spilling oil, garbage, sewage water, etc at undesirable places.
Stop burning of crackers during marriages, Diwali, etc.
Don’t dispose off eatables, packaging in oceans, rivers, etc.
Pollution disturbs our ecosystem and the balance in the environment. By following the above simple points, we all can restrict pollution at our own level.

Each year millions of people die due to various diseases caused by pollution. The key to live a healthy life is to protect the environment from pollution.

The increase in the pollution level over the years by human and natural causes has caused severe damage to the earth’s ecosystem. Lifestyle, habitat, etc everything is being adversely affected. Though natural causes cannot be stopped, but human beings’ accidental and deliberate actions can easily be stopped which surely will result in the control of pollution generation.

Types of Pollution:

Major pollutions and their causes:

Land Pollution – Wastes collated at Earth’s surface, garbage on roads, industrial debris, pesticides, insecticides, etc. Unwanted wastes lying and being decomposed release harmful gases and lead to pollution.
Water Pollution – Wastes disposed of in rivers, oceans act as pollutant in water bodies. Raw sewage, oil spills, chemical refuse, etc create poisonous water and hence lead to water pollution.
Air pollution – Burning of fossil fuels, release of gases from vehicles release mono-oxide, carbon-di-oxide, industrial pollution, nuclear radiations etc lead to air pollution.
Noise Pollution – Vehicle horns, loud music, construction machinery sounds, and other human activities create noise. This affects humans and animals, their natural vegetation and create Noise Pollution.
Thermal Pollution – Manufacturing activities lead to rise in the temperature of water and land. This affects marine and plant life. Such activities lead to thermal pollution.

ARTICLE ON POLLUTION 3 (600 WORDS)
Pollution today poses a major threat to the survival of the world we live in. Smoke or dust released in the air is the major type of pollution as it is extremely bad for the humans as it directly affects the lungs. Sewage, harmful content in drinking water is another major type of pollution that makes people unhealthy and ill because it contains disease-causing germs and viruses.

The environmental consequences of sudden rapid industrialization have resulted in various incidents of land, air and water resources sites being contaminated with toxic materials and other pollutants, threatening humans and ecosystems with serious health risks.

During manufacturing and construction activities every bit of natural resources is exploited to covert these into goods that fulfil the needs of the countries. A major cause for all the causes listed above is the manufacturing that leads to major types of pollution.

People living next to a building site where there is too much noise and construction activities rigorously going on tend to fall sick.

Pollution can be considered as direct or indirect change in any component of the biosphere that is harmful to the living components and in particular undesirable for humans, affecting adversely the industrial progress, cultural and natural assets or general environment of living society.

The biggest irony of all this is that even if we know that the earth is getting polluted, ultimately it is the human beings themselves who dig their own grave by doing deliberate activities because of which pollution is caused. It does not only spoil human beings’ health but also worsen their quality of life.

Role of the Government:

The Government has launched various pollution prevention policies and Acts that focus on preventing and controlling pollution by random means such as the following:

Adoption of clean and low waste technology, reusing and recycling, environment audit and pollution monitoring activities, reducing hazardous materials at source wherever feasible, promoting recycling of waste, etc.

There has also been a concept called “Pollution prevention approach” that seeks to increase the efficiency of a process reducing the amount of pollution generated at its source.

To give effect to the government policies, various steps have been initiated which include statutory stringent regulations, development of environmental standards, control of pollution generated through vehicles, spatial environmental planning including industrial estates and preparation of zoning atlas.

The policy statement for reduction of pollution lays emphasis on preventive aspects of pollution decline and promotion of technologies that help to reduce pollution.

Pollution control is a recent environmental concern. The Government in order to evade pollution has encouraged industries to regard ‘pollution’ as an economic problem and take reasonable actions to control the release of polluted/toxic/harmful gases at their end.

Few major pollution control measures undertaken by the government are:

Implementation of waste minimization techniques and adoption of appropriate pollution control measures.
Spreading awareness messages through programs on usage of cleaner technologies and pollution control.
Assistance for sustainable development.
Ban on usage of plastic bags, creation of paper bags.
Creation of no-honking zones.
Policy of creating industrial sites away from the city.
Creation of garbage stacks so as to avoid littering on land.
In order to fight this life threatening effects of pollution, vigorous efforts should be made. Anti-pollution laws should be strictly implemented. In order to check water pollution, sewage and the factory wastes should be properly disposed off and vehicles should be made eco-friendly.

Environmental pollution is a global problem today. Public awareness is a must to prevent pollution. Population control will also help to save the world from environmental pollution. Scientific exploitation of natural resources is yet another step to prevent environmental pollution.

ARTICLE ON POLLUTION 4 (800 WORDS)
Pollution is an act of contaminating the environment by introducing certain hazardous contaminants that lead to disturbance of ecosystem and directly or indirectly affect the human beings, animals, plants of the ecosystem. Pollution causes the disturbance of the natural system and balance of environment.

Pollution is an undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air, water and soil that may harmfully affect life or create potential health hazard of any living organism. Technological advancements done by humans are also one of the main reasons of pollution on the Earth.

Various types of pollution are caused, but mainly the following lead to life threatening and adverse effects on the humans:

Air Pollution
The most dangerous and common type of pollution, caused by release of harmful gases in the air. It is majorly caused due to the direct release of chemicals into the environment by industries. The polluted air we breathe goes into our whole body and affects all the body systems mainly the respiratory functions.

Causes of Air Pollution: Burning of fuels, smoke from vehicles, fireworks, burning of woods, and release of hazardous chemicals or chemical gases from industries or factories.

Effects of Air Pollution: Air pollution causes life threatening diseases like asthma, cancer, bronchitis, lung disorder, and many more. Depletion of ozone layer is also a cause of air pollution.

Solutions to prevent Air Pollution: Conserve energy, stop fireworks, reduce-reuse-recycle, usage of energy efficient equipments, usage of public transport, etc.

Soil Pollution
Release of harmful substances in soil is the major cause of contamination of soil. Soil pollution causes an indirect damage to humans and other animals. The nutrients taken by the plants are then transferred to the consumers that depend on these plants. Hence a soil consisting of contaminants will not only affect the plants growing on the soil but it will also indirectly harm the entire food chain.

Causes of Soil Pollution: Release of industrial wastes from large factories or industries, release of chemical wastes, agricultural chemicals, deforestation, use of pesticides, mining activities, burning of trees or plants, etc.

Effects of Soil Pollution: Soil pollution causes direct effect on plants growth, soil fertility, change in soil structure, toxic dusts, and chronic health problems to humans.

Solutions to prevent Soil Pollution: Reduce the use of plastics, reduce wastes, crop organic foods without using fertilizers and pesticides, use of biodegradable products, place liquid chemicals in the spill-proof containers, solid waste treatment, reuse and recycle things, etc.

Water Pollution
Major part of the Earth’s surface is covered with water and more than half of the total population of the species reside in water. Water is one of the most important natural resources for humans and natural vegetation to survive. Water used from a polluted lake directly contaminates its user.

Causes of Water Pollution: Direct incorporation of hazardous pollutants, Disposal of wastes in water from factories and industries, garbage disposal by humans in rivers, etc.

Effect of Water Pollution: Water creatures are on the verge of extinction, drinking contaminated water causes serious health disorders, etc.

Solutions to prevent Water Pollution: Don’t throw waste or rubbish in the rivers, oceans, use water wisely, don’t throw oil, medicines, harmful liquids in the water, buy environmentally safe liquids for cleaning purpose, etc.

Noise Pollution
Increase in noise level leads to Noise Pollution. It is not caused due to release of chemicals or toxins or hazardous gases but is just the loud noise generated in the environment. Noise is defined as the unpleasant sound that has an adverse effect on the human ear. Though the causes of this pollution are unlike others, but the effect of this pollution is as hazardous as other types of pollutions. It directly penetrates into human minds and leads to mental disorders as a major result.

Causes of Noise Pollution: Major cause is the honking of moving vehicles, loud music, running of machines at sites, radio, TV, etc.

Effect of Noise Pollution: Psychological illness, bad behaviour, irritation, hypertension, depression, forgetfulness, annoyance, stress, aggression and many more. It not only affects humans but also animals and many times lead to their cause of death due to unbearable level.

Solutions to prevent Noise Pollution: Obey the rule of no-honking until and unless necessary, construction of soundproof rooms for the heavy machines, no misuse of loudspeakers, growing trees along with roads are some of the ways to absorb sound.

Conclusion:

With the rising rate of pollution over the years, there is a worrisome increase in the rate of human diseases, and death rate of humans, various animals and plants on earth. Though pollution is released both by natural and human activities, but majorly it is created due to human activities, which can easily be minimized to reduce the pollution rate.

RESPECT downloAD from 9app

Respect is a feeling of appreciation or admiration towards an individual, group, community or a specific action and behavior. It is important in our society today that we give respect to others in order to gain respect from them. There can be various functions in schools, colleges, organizations or community when you may be requested to deliver ‘speech on respect’. We have shared here different types of respect speech which you can use as a sample and prepare your own speech. Our short speech on respect can be used at school level and long speech on respect can be used at organizational or greater level. The language of these respect speech are kept simple for anyone to easily understand. The concept is contemporary and connected to today’s problem which makes our speech unique and impressive.

First of all, thank you for being a part of this celebration. We have gathered here to celebrate the annual day of our school and like every year, we will try our best to make this celebration the most memorable for all of you.

I would also like to thank the organizers for giving me the opportunity to host the program. As you all know our school is highly recognized on the international platform and it is one the top 10 schools in the state. The students who pass out from our school get admission in popular colleges and universities and hold quite decent positions in the highly recognized organizations.

The intelligence and general knowledge of our students are highly commendable. I would also urge each of the students of this school to cultivate respect for others.  Respect as you all know is an encouraging feeling of admiration for an individual or entity. It shows the honor and kindness shown by a person towards others. It is very important that we respect each other for bringing harmony in the society and always remember that respect cannot be demanded, but earned. And, this respect is earned through our noble deeds and actions.

While it is important that we respect everyone we meet in our lives, it is equally important that we perform such deeds that can help us earn respect. Respect is the greatest asset which a person earns through his behavior and activities done for the office, home or for the community.

It is important that parents teach their kids to respect their elders, grandparents, teachers, their fellow friends and everyone living in their surroundings. Only then we will be able to build a positive society. Nowadays, people lose temper on small issues and indulge into altercations which turn out to be violent sometimes. If children are taught to forgive negligible matters and learn to respect the people around, they would grow up to be happier children.

It is also important for all of us to respect our atmosphere. We should be mindful not to throw garbage in the public place such as roads, parks, footpaths, etc. Children learn what they see; thus good habits must be inculcated by their respective parents and relatives of the children.

I would also like to focus on ‘respect for culture’. I understand that the world is getting globalized and countries are exchanging art, talents, culture, and traditions with each other. But that doesn’t allow anyone to disrespect our Indian culture. Indian culture is the oldest and one of the richest in the world. Today’s children are the future of our nation and thus they must ensure that people across the world respect India.

There is no specific definition of the term ‘respect’ nor is there any formula that would help you respect others. We respect those whom we love. But at times, we come across such people whom we must show respect without expecting anything in return. For e.g. if you are sitting while traveling in a public transport and you come across a disabled person; you must show respect and offer your seat to that person.

RESPECT video  downloAD from tubemate

I welcome all of you to the program titled ‘Give respect in order to earn respect’. Great thanks to the organizers and supporters; without your support, this wouldn’t have been possible.

As you all know, our organization is a charity organization and we work for the old-age people who are outcasts, overlooked or left behind by their relatives. I have been associated with this organization for the last 10 years, since its inception. In these 10 years, the majority of the cases I have come across are related to the senior citizens disowned by their own son/s and family. This sounds strange in a country like India where we talk about preserving our culture, tradition, religion, and ethnicity.

We share numerous messages and quotations on the Parents’ Day, Father’s Day or Mother’s Day, but in reality we lack miserably on the basic ethics and morality. Respecting your parents is not a duty or obligation, it must, in fact, be your religion. Our parents apart from bringing us in this world do so much for us. They fulfill every need of their children and struggle every day to bring a smile on their faces. But when they grow old and when they need us the most, we get so occupied with ourselves that we hardly have time for them and this is the reason why there are so many old-age homes across the world.

My father always says that youngsters gave a lot of respect for seniors in the earlier days. In those days, the youngsters would not sit in front of their elders, forget about smoking or drinking. Sadly, the culture and consciousness of respecting one another are vanishing rapidly in our society in the present times.

In the name of privacy, we indulge in petty activities such as smoking, intoxication, drinking, etc. In the name of freedom, we stay out the entire night, don’t bother to inform our elders, skip meals and vanish for days and weeks without keeping anyone in the loop. This all happen because a majority of us have lost the sense of responsibility. We are becoming more and more impatient and have created a shell around us. If our elders try to knock that shell, we lose patience and behave irrationally like shouting, throwing objects, etc.

I would also like to point out the role of social media towards this transformation. Not that I am blaming the social platform for anything, but the fact remains that majority of people who use social media have become ‘disturb me not’ kind of people. Most of the men who come back home from a tiring day prefer checking out their instant chat messages and profiles of friends on social media instead of spending time with their family. Slowly this is becoming the tradition of almost every home and children today are growing up in this environment. Such children when grow older would not have respect for the real, but virtual people.

Until we develop a sense of love and responsibility towards others, we will not be able to respect others. Respecting others is not a favor you would do to anyone; in fact, you must give respect to others for getting respect in return. The sooner we realize it, the better.

Good Morning Respected Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Friends!

First of all, I would like to welcome all of you to this inspirational program and thank to all the team members who helped each other for organizing this event. I am Vaani from class XII and it is my honor to host this event. Today, this event has been organized especially for the students and their parents. This event is based on the importance of respect in our lives. For today students have prepared play, speeches and many more activities. So before beginning with their performances I would like to deliver a speech on respect as the starting of this event.

As we all know that in today’s world everybody is running after money. Everybody knows that money plays an important role in fulfilling our requirements but, money is also a mode of acquiring a good status in the society and a good status is a mode of acquiring respect among people. So, we can say that respect is a main objective that most of the people have in their whole lives. But we could not consider money as the only means of attaining respect because our behavior and what we do with other people tells us about our respect among them.

Almost everybody in this world wants to get respect. If we want to gain respect then it is very important other people respect also. For gaining respect, a person should understand that he could not ask everybody for respect but he has to earn it because respect can only be earned. A person could gain respect by doing good deeds or by such activities that have the potential of creating respect for him into another’s mind.

If we are talking about respect, then there are some important people in everyone’s life to whom we give so much respect such as our respected parents, grandparents, teachers, etc. These people hold a very important place in our life and in the heart as well. They are the most respected people in our lives.

Despite all these respected people in our lives, there are some people who by their inspirational lives and good deeds forces us to give them respect. Yes! I am talking about our respected soldiers and police because they are the reason for how our country is retaining freedom and independence. They are risking their lives for saving our lives. It is truly not an easy task of protecting such a huge country like ours. They are one of the biggest reasons behind our country’s respect in the entire world.

On this note, I would like conclude my speech and extend special thanks to our Hon’ble Principal ma’am, Teachers for supporting us for organizing this event as well as to all the parents who joined us in this event and for giving this event a great success. I would also like to thank my team members who organized this event with a unity.

Today our college has organized a debate competition for all the students. I am Vaanika and it is my pleasure to host this competition. This debate competition has been especially organized for the students so that it will help them in conquering their hesitation and fear. The topic for today’s debate competition is ‘Respect Can Only Be Earned’. As we know that one team has to defend this line and another has to go against. But before moving further, I want to say a few words about respect.

As everybody knows that respect is something that almost everybody wants to have. The very important thing that every person should know is that if we want respect than we have to give respect to others also. Every person in this world gains respect on the basis of his/her deeds. If a person has a good behavior or a helping nature then it automatically forces other people to give him respect.

As we know that there are few most important people in our life to whom we should give respect. Yes, I am talking about our parents, teachers, grandparents and many other respected people around us. They are the one who teaches us how to give respect and how to gain respect. We respect our parents because they are the reason for our existence in this world and they do every possible struggle for us to keep us happy. Grandparents also play an important role in our lives. They are known as the most respective people in the house. Most of the grandparents are used to and also loves to take care of their grandchildren. During childhood, mostly children get more attached with their grandparents. But unfortunately, most of the parents and grandparents are neglected by their own children or grandchildren and they have to live their life in the old age homes. This is one of the most painful behave of the children who overlook their parents and grandparents at the time they need their support. Apart from getting respect from their children, they are overlooked and have to go to the old age homes.

Among all these respected people in our life, teachers also hold a very important place. A teacher shows the correct path to his student that leads the student to success. It is quite impossible to attain success without anybody’s guidance and there is no big guide in this world then a teacher. A good teacher makes his best possible efforts to make his student’s future bright. But after having a bright future, most of the students forget to thank their teachers. One should never forget his/her parents, teachers and every person from whom they supported.

So, if we really want to gain respect then firstly we have to respect others and especially our elders including parents, teachers and other elder people.

On this note, I would like to conclude my speech and extend special thanks to our hon’ble principal ma’am for giving us this opportunity to express our views in front of everybody.

FEMALE FOETICIDE download from 9app

FEMALE FOETICIDE download from 9app

Female foeticide takes place when a foetus is aborted after it is determined to be female. Under this illegal practice, the sex of the unborn child is determined by using the technique of ultrasound and if it happens to be a female foetus, it is aborted through medicine or surgery. It is one of the most rampant social evils in the country. It is rooted in the patriarchal mindset where boys are preferred over girls for various irrational reasons, not only in rural but urban areas too. We have to raise awareness levels against the regressive practice of female foeticide, enforce laws far more stringently and provide much more incentives to the households for the birth of a girl child.

We are providing here four articles on female foeticide useful for all people especially for students. All the articles are written in simple English language with different word counts of 300, 500, 600 and 800, respectively.

FEMALE FOETICIDE ARTICLES
ARTICLE ON FEMALE FOETICIDE 1 (300 WORDS)
The patriarchal social structure in India and the society’s preference towards a male child is the major reason behind female foeticide. To carry forward the generation, families in general prefer the birth of sons over daughters. The male child is also required by the Hindu family to perform the last rites of father in the absence of which, it is believed that the father would not attain salvation after death.

Menace of dowry

In most traditional, conservative families, a girl child is more or less considered a liability or a burden, due to the frequent demands of huge sum in the form of dowry at the time of her marriage. On the other hand, it is seen that the father of the male child bargains very hard to maximize the benefits of marriage for his son. Though the parents have to face similar ordeals in getting their kids educated and settled in their lives, whether they are boys or girls, however, the mindset inclined towards the baby boy refuses to go, giving way to killing of female foetuses.

Sex determination tests put to wrong use

With the progress of science and technology, it is quite easy to find out the gender of the foetus. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous medical practitioners are also found to be increasingly involved in the illegal trade of carrying out sex-determination tests and later complying with the wishes of the parents for abortion of the foetus, if it is found out to be female.

Conclusion: Female foeticide is nothing but the misuse of pre-natal technology which was invented to detect abnormality in unborn child before it could actually take birth. It’s really very unfortunate that the technology is often used in detecting the sex of the foetus and if it is a girl, then parents have no qualms in getting it aborted.

Female foeticide is a crime against women as it debars them to take birth. Of late, sex-selective abortions to get only male kids born in the family have gained momentum. Though the medical techniques used to determine sex of the child been helpful in various surgeries or treatments required to avoid complications during the birth and to know more about the health of the unborn baby, however, this technique is being used quite often for sex-selective abortions.

Inadequate enforcement

Eliminating female foetus in the womb of a woman is possible with the help of simple techniques starting from ultrasound and then some medicines which forces the foetus to die.

To stop the evil practice of female foeticide, strict punishment in the form of fine or jail to the person requesting abortion of the unborn girl child is prescribed under Pre Natal Diagnostics Techniques (PNDT) Act. Simultaneously the practitioner who helps in sex determination for this purpose is also required to be punished equally.

But the PNDT has failed to check female infanticide as the sex determination and services needed for the same have mushroomed accordingly. Law has been unable to curb the misuse of ultrasound machines by unscrupulous operators. After the determination of female foetus, many women go for abortion of their own accord. Sometimes they forced by their family members who find some medical practitioners willing to carry the surgical procedure against the enforced law.

Growing Menace

Though there is little justification for the unscrupulous murder of female foetus, three is an increasing trend of families in urban as well as rural regions across the country going for the illegal practice of sex-determination test. On its part, the government has attempted to regulate the use of pre-natal diagnostic techniques for legal or medical purposes through the PNDT Act 1994 and has also set up a central body to check killing of female foetus through abortion.

Also, we cannot blame the entire doctor community for carrying out sex-selective tests. It’s only an unscrupulous bunch of doctors who become willing partners of parents in not allowing many girls to come into this world.

Winds of Change

The winds of change have now started blowing in the society with girls doing well in diverse professions, which were considered male-bastions up until now, such as boxing, wrestling, martial arts, armed forces, etc. ‘Beti Bachao, Beti  Padhao (Save and educate the girl child) has become a countrywide movement. Fortunately, a growing number of medical practitioners have now rallied themselves against the sex selective abortions. The development is very encouraging for the development of the nation and it will also help correct the skewed male-female ratio in many states of the country.

Conclusion: Though there is PNDT Act 1994 in place to prevent the abuse of sex-determination test, we require an attitudinal change in society to abolish the heinous practice of female foeticide. Fortunately, the society is now beginning to realize the importance of the girl child with the result that equal opportunities of nutrition, health, education and employment are now available to women.

ARTICLE ON FEMALE FOETICIDE 3 (600 WORDS)
Female foeticide refers to getting rid of the female foetus by surgical termination. This interrupting of the birth of the girl child has led to skewed male-female sex ratio in many states across the country, which has even given rise to trafficking of girls from other parts. All this has resulted in the rampant exploitation of women at the hands of an unjust social order.

Interrupting Life

Female foeticide is no less than an act of cutting  short life, a case of life interrupted but the  people indulging in it find willing partners in their crime who are blinded by the lure of money. Ironically, sometimes women themselves surrender to the illegal and immoral practice of getting their female foetus aborted due to family and social pressure.

A legal and immoral Act

As per the provisions of Pre Natal Diagnostics Techniques (PNDT) Act, it is a crime for the couples who request for abortion of the female foetus as well as for the doctors who perform it. In moral terms too, it is an inhumane act of terminating the life of an unborn girl child due to conservative outlook or greed. The parents of the girl child do not realise that they will have to make equal efforts in rearing and settling their child irrespective of gender.

Poor Enforcement of law

Nobody had anticipated that technological advances would lead to female foeticide. Sex screening technologies, though meant to investigate pre-natal complications, became liable for misuse facilitating abortions of female foetuses in India through the 1980s. Subsequently, the Government of India passed the Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PNDT) in 1994. This Act underwent further amendment as the Pre-Conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) (PCPNDT) Act in 2004 with a mandate to deter and penalise prenatal sex screening and female foeticide. However, all these legal provisions have received poor enforcement.

Signs of Change

Gradually, however, the outlook of society towards the girl child is beginning to change with women proving their worth in all professions, many of which were earlier considered to be the exclusive domains of men. There is increasing awareness with regard to the rights of a girl child for providing them equal opportunities for upbringing, health, education and jobs. The Central and the state governments too are running various programmes and schemes for improving the lot of women in the country and the voices against female foeticide are becoming louder by the day. Consequently, there is marked change in the attitude of women with regard to their abilities to break all barriers in their all-round development.

Let’s stand by the girl child

It is a social and moral responsibility of every citizen of this country to put an end to the practice of female foeticide and also spread awareness about the need for believing in the merits of women to play multiple roles in the life of the nation as they have proven to be outstanding performers in different professions. Nature too has gifted women to play different roles of a daughter, sister, wife and mother with equal ease and success.

Gone are the days when women were considered paraya dhan — meant to take care of  their in-laws’ family;  they are now individuals in their own right, who are leaving a distinct mark in all professions, while managing their homes and families too. They are bringing laurels to their parents as well as their country. In the recently, held Rio Olympics 2016, PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik  upheld the honour of their countries by winning silver and bronze medals, respectively in the otherwise lacklustre tally of India.

ARTICLE ON FEMALE FOETICIDE 4 (800 WORDS)
In a country where, as per scriptures, Gods reside in places where a woman is worshiped (Yatra Nari Astu Pujyante, Ramante Tatra Devataa), female foeticide is an ironical but sad truth. It has become a grave social issue across the country. Female foetuses are killed in the wombs of their mothers through Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) by a ruthless society that prefers sons over daughters.

The bane of dowry

In many traditional, conservative families, a girl is considered a liability or burden, due to the evil practice of demanding dowry at time of marriage. Often, she is also subjected to sexual harassment, molestation, rape and beating, prompting the parents to fear the prospect of rearing, educating, protecting or marrying off their daughters. Daily newspapers are full of the news about molestation, rapes, acid-throwing, sexual harassment, bride beating and burning, which accentuate the apprehension of families regarding a girl child, All these things, in turn, encourage the practice of aborting the foetus in case it is determined to be female.

Misuse of pre-natal tests

There is increasing trend of the misuse of the pre-natal technologies which are used to determine pre-birth deficiencies or infirmities in a child. Aiding the massacre of unborn girls are the mushrooming ultrasound clinics who connive with parents in carrying out sex-determination tests and killing the child in the womb, in case it is found out to be a girl. Such unscrupulous people deserve strictest punishment but they are able to escape the law in most cases due to inadequacies in the law enforcing mechanism.

Age-old biases

Traditional, conservative families are still unable to shake off their longing for a son as they tend to believe that only sons can carry their family names forward and also look after them in their old age. They also subscribe to the notion that only when funeral rites are performed by a son that the deceased attains salvation.

Disturbing statistics

According to 2011 Census, the birth of girls was pegged at 914.23 for every 1,000 boys in the age group 0-6 years, contrary to 927.31 for every 1,000 boys in the 2001 Census. Except improvement in the sex ratio in Kerala, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry, all other states have reported decrease in the number of girls, notable among them being Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh and Gujarat.

Change in the air

But gradually, the winds of change have started blowing across the society as girls are doing exceptionally well in various professions, bringing a sense of pride and recognition to their families, cities and nation. They have broken all barriers and excelled in all fields, be it sports, armed forces, business or politics. In the recently held Rio Olympics 2016, only two women were the lone medal winners for India – P V Sindhu in badminton and Sakshi Malik in wrestling. The field of politics today is also dominated by women – Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Sheila Dixit; Sushma Swaraj, Uma Bharti, Vasundhra Raje, Menaka Gandhi, Smriti Irani, Pankaja Munde, Mamata Bannerjee, Mayawati, Brinda Karat, and Mehbooba Mufti.

But miles to go…

Consequently, social attitudes towards women are changing, leading to their empowerment, still we cannot say that it has put an end to the practice of female foeticide as it will take time for the change in mindsets to percolate down to all towns and cities of the country. Generally, after the birth of two or more girls, many parents go for sex-selective tests and go ahead with the pregnancy only if the foetus is found to be a male.

In some rural areas where people cannot go for sex-determination tests, female foeticide degenerates into female infanticide wherein a girl child is killed after birth by unimaginably horrible methods – she is strangulated, poisoned, dumped in garbage bins, drowned, burnt alive, or starved to death. Sadly, such crimes are committed by mothers or other female members of the household all because they are prisoners of their own regressive, medieval outlook.

Generally, in urban areas too, things are not different on the ground. The desire for a male child is common across households irrespective of their socio-economic conditions. So, the educated couples take recourse to ultrasound techniques of determining the gender of their unborn child and in case it is found to be female, they have no qualms about terminating it through MTP.

Conclusion: The root cause of the still prevalence of female foeticide in the 21st century is the age-old patriarchal mindset where sweets are distributed after the birth of a baby boy but the birth of a girl plunges the family into unexplained sadness. We need to empower girls in every sense of the term – educational, social, economic and political so that Indian families learn to practice no-discrimination with regard to the gender of their child.
